Apparently Steven Moffat is gone from Twitter and the word is that idiots are responsible. Also, Caitlin Blackwood (who played the younger version of Amy Pond) has been getting nasty tweets into the bargain. So obviously I'll remove the link to Steven Moffat's twitter page on this comm.
This is the kind of thing which makes me deliberately want to say inflammatory things about other eras of this show, incidentally.
EDIT: Apparently the Caitlin Blackwood account was fake all along, though there's nothing to say the people who tweeted the abuse knew that.

Date: 2012-09-11 10:41 pm (UTC)From:IMO, it may in part be an accidental side effect of the fact that Moffat does go out of his way to be pro-woman. And write flawed women, and write complex storylines surrounding women. He consistently attempts exceedingly complex things with women in them, and the more complex the thing, the more flaws it's likely to accumulate. In contrast, a writer who doesn't go out of his way to put women center stage doesn't have the opportunity to fall on his face. Or, at least, won't fall on his face in exactly the same way. "Wish there were more cool female characters," is, unfortunately, a complaint most of us almost take as read.

She never got an answer to that question, instead, the hatred turned on her. Martin's own wife for cryin' out loud!
However, fandom sunk to an all time low when the hatred spilled over to touch Caitlin Blackwood. SHe's twelve people, 12! I don't even know how she got sucked into that cesspool called twitter, but spewing hatred and threats aty a 12 year old girl, is just wrong wrong wrong.
THis whole thing is just wrong.
I have the utmost respect for Steven Moffat. He was a geeky little kid at the back of the class writing stories because he was lonely, just like me and thousands of others out there, only he made it big and catered to us!
The man and his works bring me a lot of joy. And I'd rather focus on that, the amazing Sue and Amanda and the lovely, talented Caitlin.
Whew! Didn't realize I had that much of a rant in me, LOL!!!

Date: 2012-09-12 05:25 am (UTC)From:I was reading the previous comments here and felt compelled to put in my two cents about the portrayal of women on Who. I honestly don't get where the "sexist" criticism is coming from; Amy Pond and River Song are two of the strongest female characters on TV as far as I'm concerned. It seemed to me that Moffat was carrying on the tradition of strong Who women. Both his and RTD's women have their flaws, that's what makes them human (although RTD's Gwen truly annoys me). As for the comparisons between Moffat and RTD, I'm a fan of both of them and think they're brilliant writers. I don't always agree with their story choices, but they've both done right by Who overall.

Date: 2012-09-12 08:47 am (UTC)From:There is a quote in an old Steven Moffat interview from 2004 or 2005 where he appears to say that women are "needy" and that men can go for longer without women. He has disowned the quote and said that he never said anything of the sort. However, since some elements of fandom saw the quote they have decided he is sexist and twisted the evidence to fit their claims.

Even if you do hate what someone has done to a show, there is absolutely no need to send them hateful messages. If you don't like something just don't watch it!
