Alright, having watched it properly now (i.e. not half drunk and stuffed full of turkey), I think I was being a bit harsh. The first 30 minutes are very good. I really like the opening, Claire Skinner is great, the stuff with the telegram and "because they'll be sad later" was genuinely touching and the enchanted forest started out quite well.
For me, it's only when you realise that nothing particularly scary hatched from those baubles and those trees have purely noble intentions that things go downhill. After that it's all "the trees are screaming" and suddenly being able to pilot a tree harvester from 3000 years in the future and THE POWER OF A MOTHER'S LOVE and all that. And I guess we probably all knew that the father would be rescued somehow, so the ending was fairly obvious.
I did really enjoy seeing the Ponds at the end. I think my main problem with it is that I loved last year's xmas special so much that this year's special couldn't really follow it, especially given that this "parental love" stuff was a recurring theme throughout season 6. I know it's a kids show and I'm happy to put up with quite a lot of sentimentality at Christmas, but I just keep thinking about the thousands of kids watching this who don't have brilliant, sensitive, self-sacrificing parents and how they feel at having to see this stuff in every episode.
I liked it. Claire Skinner was marvellous. I liked the kids, and I rarely like the kids in these kinds of things. I liked the start although I could have done with more Bill Bailey. Really liked those three characters, they deserve another episode.
The ending with the rescued dad was completely predictably, but I don't mind because of how it was done. The mam rescued him. And the forest. And the kids. And the Doctor. How often do you see that in mainstream tv/cinema? Mam's are usually shit. I liked the trees. Because trees are awesome.
