I myself will be missing tonight's episode because it's my sister's hen night. Will be watching tomorrow, so don't feel you have to wait for me to get started!
I enjoyed that episode mostly. Apart from older Amy and Rory's lengthy discussion through the TARDIS door at the end which bored me shitless instead of what I presume was meant to be the intended effect of emotion or tears.
I liked older Amy, even if she was bitter and selfish. But I can sympathise what with her being stuck there on her own with 'killer' robots for 39 years (or whatever she said). Rory the robot amused me more than it should have. I like it better than normal Rory. Robot Rory should replace human Rory. That would be awesome.
But though I liked most of it, I get the feeling it's one of those episodes I won't watch very often. Looking back, not all that much seemed to happen. Not if you're not interested in Amy and Rory's relationship, that is.
Also liked the Doctor's betrayal. Though I suspected as much. Naughty Doctor.
I too noticed at the end that nothing much had happened really. It seemed like there was a lot of exposition at the beginning, and then the rest of it was just "look at what's happened!"
I knew the Doctor was going to slam the door in her face. And although it was probably the right thing to do, someone really should have punched him for it.
Having now finally watched it (on the third attempt - watching this episode under the influence of tequila is not recommended), I enjoyed it a lot. I was a bit surprised by the direction of the episode. At the beginning I thought it was all going to be a big puzzle or a metaphor for something and then it turned into a straight-forward love story, which is fine but not what I expected.
I thought Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were both very good here. Have to say I felt more for the older version of Amy. Of course you have to sacrifice the older version to save the younger version, but I can understand her reluctance to have everything that's happened to her nullified. I love kickass older Amy. I love that she built a sonic screwdriver, I love that she tells the Doctor off for his "whimsy" and I love that she smashes the hell out of those robots. I love younger Amy too, but sometimes when she's being all flippant and "whatever," it's easy to overlook how good an actress Karen Gillan is. Older Amy is intense as hell.
The only thing I would say is that perhaps the goodbye scene between Rory and older Amy went on a bit too long. I was fine with it until the point where older Amy says "Tell her I'm giving her the days." At that point I thought "right, point made. Time to move on."
Three other things:- Firstly, it was odd to see River not mentioned at all here, especially when discussing which Amy should be saved (surely seeing your daughter again would be a motivating factor for either of them). I'm beginning to wonder if there's a reason she's not being mentioned - either something to do with the plot (do they all remember what happened?) or a decision taken to avoid River-fatigue. Did the writers of these standalone episodes even know what was going to happen in previous episodes, or were they kept in the dark to prevent spoiler leakage.
Secondly, although the Doctor probably did the right things for the right reasons, I would not have objected to someone giving him a smack at some point in this.
Finally, Rory's stupid glasses are giving me flashbacks to my teenage crushes on Graham Coxon and Jarvis Cocker.
