I was late to the party with the Is Doctor Who sexist? post awhile back, so I thought I'd repost this so people will have a decent chance of seeing it.

I follow Moffat on twitter, and a while back he tweeted addressing some quotes including this: "There’s this issue you’re not allowed to discuss: that women are needy. Men can go for longer, more happily, without women. That’s the truth. We don’t, as little boys, play at being married - we try to avoid it for as long as possible. Meanwhile women are out there hunting for husbands."

His responses: Oh, That's where it's all coming from, been wondering. I remember that interview - never said any of that, nor do I think it. & he clarifies Probably a Coupling interview. They always took the characters views and gave them to ME. Which is why I only talk in jokes now.

I personally found those two tweets made a lot of sense, since I never thought his writing seemed consistent with the (apparently misconstrued) quote. Just thought I'd share in case it might help clarify things for anyone else.

thanks, I always thought that it was bollocks. Moff has created some of the strongest kick ass women in Doctor Who.

Thanks for reposting this, it's typical of the internet the scandalous stuff get circulated and recirculated whilst the corrections are always buried away in obscure places.

I do dip in and out of twitter, but because I'm non-committal towards it, I missed this. It comes as something of a relief to me, I must say.

Thank you for sharing that. It makes complete sense, especially given the terrific characters he's created for Doctor Who.

That's for sharing that. I knew that Moffat's writing and characterisation contradicted that quote. Happy to find out it was a misquote.

I don't have twitter, but normally twitter links work for me and those don't. Also: any link/ID on the interview in question? Is it this one? (http://living.scotsman.com/features/Time-Lad-scores-with-sex.2535185.jp) That's hardly the only objectionable quote in there.

As I wrote in that post, I do think Doctor Who is sexist, not chomping on the scenery and kicking the dog sexist but still sexist, and the tweets you quoted do nothing to make me think better of him, he comes off as dismissive in a way that makes me more concerned, not less.

Oh! Context does matter. He's saying that to you not the person criticizing him.

Yay context. Glad I asked for it.

Even if I didn't ask for the right context. Still went looking for it.
