I think Moffat Doctor Who has often had a theme of "don't trust the Doctor, don't put your faith in him". Even as early as "The Girl in the Fireplace" we see Reinette putting her faith in the Doctor's promise to return... and he doesn't. He doesn't take her to see the stars, he doesn't save her from an early death, nothing he promises her comes true. Amy, Rory, they put their faith in the Doctor's ability to "fix" things, but he's a very sad excuse for a god, and often botches things up more than he fixes them.
Moffat seems very clear in that humans are not really meant to go putting their dreams and hopes in the man with the blue box, and that even if you think you're getting what you asked for, it's often very different from what you had wanted. Being "saved" by the Doctor can be worse than an ordinary death. Time travel fucks you up. The universe is too big and the earth too small to contain a human with both inside them.
